SAN JOSE, Calif. and BARCELONA, Spain, Feb. 22, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Cavium, Inc., (NASDAQ: CAVM), a leading provider of semiconductor products that enable intelligent processing for enterprise, data center, wired and wireless networking today announced a collaboration with ON.Lab for a Proof of Concept (POC) for the Mobility Data Center (M-CORD) using Cavium's ThunderX COTS servers and OCTEON Fusion-M baseband processors at next week's Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain.
Building on the success of the original CORD project the MCORD expands the scope of the POC to include specific uses cases of SDN and NFV for mobility wireless applications. The ability to seamlessly integrate new technologies such as Cloud RAN (C-RAN), Mobile Edge Computing (MEC) and virtualize core functions such as the Evolved Packet Core (EPC) provide an innovative and scalable solution for many of the issues faced by carriers as they expand existing networks and look to the needs of the future.
"To meet the mobile operators' requirements and take advantages of the mobile edge environment a well-defined and cost-efficient platform is essential," said Mingeun Yoon, Architect at SK Telecom. "Cavium's virtualized RAN solution in combination with MCORD architecture showcases a feasible mobile edge service model."
Guru Parulkar, Executive Director and Board Member at ON.Lab/ONOS project said, "We look forward to Cavium's contributions to the community. We are delighted that Cavium shares our goals and is contributing to the initiatives of the consortium based on the Cavium processor architecture."
"We are excited to collaborate with ON.Lab for a 3GPP compliant disaggregated, and virtualized mobile infrastructure using our ThunderX workload optimized servers and our OCTEON Fusion-M Baseband Processors," said Raj Singh, General Manager of the Wireless Broadband Group at Cavium. "The M-CORD collaboration allows us to demonstrate the benefits of SDN and NFV in mobile infrastructure, and several agile service deployment scenarios of mobile edge computing."
"SDN and NFV in conjunction with Centralized/Cloud-RAN and MEC are essential to next generation networks," said Monica Paolini Founder and President of Senza Fili a leading analyst and consulting firm on wireless data technologies. "Cavium is leading the way with advances in silicon and process technology to allow scalable software solutions to previously rigid fixed function network solutions."
